Our friends at Hard Workers Club are working with the Independent Photography Festival on this years photo prize. To get involved hit read more below -

On behalf of ourselves, Parts & Crafts, Tourisms, and The Thousands Melbourne, we are very pleased and enormously excited to announce the call for submissions for the inaugural IPF Photo Prize 2012.

The Independent Photography Festival (IPF) will utilise the strengths and skills of the photographic community HWC so prides itself in being a part of to further bring to the forefront the multi-faceted, far-reaching, diverse, and prolific nature of what we’re all working hard at.

The Photo Prize is one of a week-long programme of events to be held in Melbourne fromMonday 2 - Sunday 8 April 2012, designed - and aiming - to celebrate and highlight the best of what our community of independent and autonomous photographers and creatives has to offer.

We’ll be exhibiting all acceptable submissions after a preliminary review as a part of the IPF 2012 program, with all prints on sale to the public by silent auction, and with all proceeds from work(s) sold returned to the artist(s).

We’ve also asked some of our more local friends to help us create a set of relevant and righteous prizes for our 3 Prize Categories (Judge’s Panel 1st & 2nd Place and a People’s Choice Award) and we’re gunning for a couple more big boy prizes to add to the mix, so until we have all that locked in, we’re holding back on what’s on offer, but rest assured we’ll look after you.

We might try and make a publication of the work after the event, too.

The Screens

This body of work attempts to represent something of a life as it is lived today. As people spend more and more time in digitally produced environments, and as their significance in people’s lives increase, the body and physical space may decrease importance. By combining both documentary mode and complex conceptual structures, I am investigating the charged relationship between human beings and screens.

In this series I make long exposure black and white photographs of interior spaces illuminated solely by light emitted from computer screens. The camera uses the same position as the screen, thus the final outcome results in a paradoxical competing situation between observer and observed; challenging the viewer’s experience and interpretation.

The screen also functions as the essential light source for the photograph, without it, it would not exist. The end result is a series of visual explorations of how consciousness and perception, the key tools of knowing reality, are themselves becoming to be defined by technology.

Our friend Matt Martin has just started The Photocopy Club. A monthly exhibition across Brighton and London featuring only photocopies from artists across the globe. We spoke to him about the project -

What is the photocopy club?

The photocopy club is a monthly photography exhibition based in Brighton and London that focases on getting photography off the internet and getting printed matter back in to the hands of the public. It is an open submission exhibition where all the photography is printed using a photocopier/xerox machine by the photographer, signed and dated and then posted to us. We wanted it to be as DIY as possible and keep photographers cost as low as we could.

How did the idea come about?

I have been wanting to put together a group show for a while. Basing it around the work we have had on wearelucky. I thought that photographers would be more into sending photocopies than prints due to the cost off printing these days. I wanted to take it back to the days of no email where people had to send work around the world to get there photography seen. I didn't want people to just send me digital files. I wanted people to enjoy experimenting with how they could make there photography stand out just using a photocopier wether this be by printing on coloured paper, differnt sizes or differnt weights of paper.

What do you find appealing about photocopies?

I love the photocopy estitic and the whole DIY approch. Where would we be with out it. Flyers, Gig posters, zines and its so inexspensive. Some places print for as little as 3p.
Photography is becoming so lost on the internet. Printed matter is coming back with zines and people putting on exhibitions and it needs to keep moving.

Do you think there are certain images that don't suit photocopying?

We have recived such a huge range of photography and everything has seemed to work well using this format.

Whats the best photocopy you've received so far?

People are coming up with some really good ideas. Some one sent a photocopy folded in to the shape of a swan.
I really like it when we get A0 prints. we have recived a good range of sizes. A photographer wrote the submission address on his hand and
photocopied it and stuck it on the envelope, that was cool.

'Remains to be Seen’ is a personal work which explores grief, loss and memory and the emotional impact these experiences have had on the way he has come to perceive the world here in the present. It’s a series of clues, keys, symbols, echoes and traces. Like latent fingerprints lifted from the psyche - made thousands of miles away from the graves of which it speaks of and recorded several years ‘after the facts’. Because of a lack of direct access to perhaps more concrete ‘evidence’ which still remains stored in a barn in England, a basement in Norway and a spare bedroom in Wales, this book has become very much a history of the present....

Because of this, Simon's only resources for making this work has been internal in nature - accompanied by a certain awareness, like a frequency that was tuned into and the series as a whole has been, to some extent, something of a ghost hunt. The sad events which have silently surrounded this project have consequently altered who he is today in ways which he's still discovering. It is not an exorcism because the possession (if this is what it is to be called) is permanent - dissolved into the self and is present more as an evolution in progress.

This project has stemmed from my thinking and research into peripheral settlements in England. I started searching for places with a degree of remoteness - places on the edge, the edge of our island - the coast. The 101 huts of the South Gare Fishermans Huts Association sit in the shadow of the mothballed Corus Steel Plant - part bolt-holes, part recreational, part useful wooden huts that all have a different owner, and therefore history.

An Interview with Sean Vegezzi

We recently had a rather in depth conversation with New York based photographer, Sean Vegezzi, about exploration, style and the importance of image making -

From looking at your images, one gathers that the motive for your work is exploration, would you agree?

I feel that exploration is the initial idea that most people will pick up on when they look at my work, so yes, I would definitely agree. I'm very turned off by the term "Urban Exploration" and the entire subculture or following behind it, whatever you would like to call it. I think it's important to say that "Urban Exploration" is by no means a well thought out term. People have gone to off limits places forever...

To me, it's a universal rite of passage for any young person. When you're young and blind to the idea of danger and consequences, going someplace you're not allowed to is not that unusual. There's no real term that exists to explain that idea and that's why it's beautiful. My Father and hordes of others have explored way before me, the term didn't exist for them then, it would most likely be shrugged off as tom-foolery or something. The exploration I'm referring to doesn't pigeon hole itself. "Urban Exploration" is a meme, a label and a phenomenon that was born online. I'm not a curmudgeon who's against ideas that are born online, I just like the timelessness of my idea. While I do explore in an urban environment, I have no desire to package up what I do into such a narrow term, it's like calling the act of walking across a street in any urban environment, "Urban Walking".

Why do you think it is important to photograph such explorations?

My view on why it's important to make photographs is ever changing and always will be as long as I'm maturing. When I was younger, I felt that was important to photograph such explorations because I wanted to be able to look at photographs with my friends and relive the experience whenever we wanted. Then the desire to share my photographs outside of my direct circle of friends came about, I wanted to show other kids in my school and my neighborhood what my friends and I were up to, I guess I could call it an innocent social bragging right... Although it wasn't elitist in any way, every kid I grew up with was into their own hobby and school served as a platform to share experiences and interests. In the last two years, my interest in photography has become a lot more precious and introverted and I can't really define why I think it's important to photograph such explorations outside the confines of the idea that photographs can serve as a tangible timeline of your life. When looking at the span of my work, I can literally enter these bygone states of self of my friends and I, it's really good for me and almost educational but it can be weird and perverse at times, it's like being able to time travel, it's not always a pleasant ride.

Would you explore without taking your camera?

I explore and go out without a camera more than I do with one. Not bringing a camera with me every time I head out is not a bad thing. I feel that so many people in the realm of photography perpetuate this idea that if you don't carry a camera with you at all times, that you're not a photographer. This idea is a myth to me and it's kept alive by so many people in the "industry" from fine artists to war photographers. With that said, I go on my missions without a camera quite often and spend more time not making photographs than I do making more but I'm always out there sneaking around. To be honest, I think the camera can really offset everything I'm about sometimes, I just go with my gut and bring my camera when I happen to. Photographs are just tangible memories to me, I'm ok with the majority of moments in my life not being captured, I need to internalize some moments for myself and not be able to view them so easily. If I felt like all my photographs were falling into some kind of abyss without purpose, I would never take any photographs. However I walk all around my city without any purpose at all and I continue to do so.

Do you use photography to record or create?

The line between recording and creating is blurry to me, I think those terms are interchangeable. Having a camera obviously allows you to record and create, but you could unconciously do one or the other. The line is blurred even further when I look at my work after it has aged a bit, I used to think I was just recording when I shot all of this footage on digital 8 when I was 12. Now that I just recently got it all transferred, its more of a creation. There's this rush to antiquated processes that a lot of younger people are taking part in (including myself, by shooting film) and I constantly hear younger people trashing the progression of photography. I'm starting to see that there's something to be had in both reducing yourself to analogue AND joining the liquidity of modern photography. I create and record consciously and unconsciously.

Would you say that your images have a specific style?

I feel that my photographs don't necessarily possess a style. I felt little waves of inadequacy when I used to read tidbits about x photographers "style" and especially when I first started working for Annie Leibovitz, who has such a distinct style. I know its a trite idea to bring up, but there's just some photographers that have something in their work that is so easy to identify, you can know who it is at a first glance. I don't really have that on such a serious scale yet, but locally I guess people know that I'm all about the underground and being where you're not supposed to be. Lots of people have snuck into subway tunnels and taken pictures before, but none of them really have a direct relationship to the spaces they shoot, their imagery is void of a relationship from what I see, they're bland. Maybe I'm hyper concentrated on story and meaning and not so much about creating tons of aesthetically pleasing images. I think my style is more about the stories in my images and less about how I contrive situations and light them. That could change at anytime though and I wouldn't feel like I lost my relevance or my soul.

How do you decide which photographs are successful when editing?

Even though I've been making photographs for awhile, I think I've only just begun to understand how I need to edit. I've done one edit in 2011 and it took almost 5 month's. In the two years leading up to that edit, I had shot something slightly over six thousand individual negatives, so that's close to one hundred and seventy rolls of film and I don't even remember bringing my camera out that much. A lot of my editing is already done before I look at my images because I don't shoot if I'm not stimulated, I keep my capturing to a minimum. When editing this year I tried to keep my space completely free of all concerns and communication, I basically turned into the invisible man, the Ralph Ellison version. What made certain photographs successful was their ability to remain important and relevant to me over a period of time. Some photographs remained up on my wall for almost a month until I discovered that I liked them for the wrong reason or that they were absolutely amazing. I've figured out that I decide which photographs are successful by putting them through an obstacle course of sorts, they may purely please me visually at first, but get stuck and fail when I realize that beyond pure aesthetic attraction, there's nothing there. I'm very ok with the fact that as an artist, I make a lot of worthless things and it's important to fall completely on your face before you just place things in the public realm. Photographs can always find a new relevance and importance once you begin to look for something else though, I'm looking for something very specific right now.

Do you think that youth encourages exploration? And if so, as you get older will your practice retreat to more known environments?

Youth SHOULD encourage exploration. I think I will sound like too dark if I talk about how I'm almost embarrassed to be a young person right now, I'll save it. Youth definitely does encourage exploration though, it's something I'm endlessly fascinated by. I think that youth encourages exploration because of the curiosity youth has but just as much by not having an understanding of consequences. Motives change as you get older though and my motives for exploring got more diverse and beautiful. I was lucky they didn't get rotten and disintegrate. I've noticed that as I have gotten older, I'm constantly watching old haunts get demolished, converted and given a new life and get discovered by others... but I embrace that, it's part of growing up. Documenting these explorations is like a way of endlessly playing around and being happy. I thought I wouldn't explore that much at 21, but then I realized that I've continued to do something youthful out of it's phasic limits and it's now a way of life. The day where I pass an unlocked door to a building, an open manhole, a subway platform void of passengers... and don't think about how what is a little beyond them, is the day I should kick the bucket. I don't think that my artistic practice will necessarily retreat to more known environments as I get older because I'm very turned off by how poorly designed and uninteresting most public spaces are.

HG: Tell us a little bit about yourself...where you're from what you do?

PN: My name is Piotr. I was born and raised in Poland but 5 years ago I moved to Milan, where I live now. I work for PIG Magazine as a photo-editor and I have just started collaborating with 2DM agency, where I take care of others' portfolios and stuff like that. And of course I take photos. (I've also just got a Masters Degree in Architecture, but it not so relevant, just wanted to boast about it)

HG: How long have you been making photographs?

PN: More or less it all started when I moved to Italy. I was just taking pictures to keep my friends back home updated about my new life. Then, when I met the PIG crew and they liked them, it got more serious and hopefully one day I will be able to put 'photographer' on the business card under my name .

HG: Your practice has a sculptural quality to it would you say this is directly influenced by your interest in architecture?

PN: It's not 'an interest' in my case, but university has definitely changed the way I'm looking at the world. The cool thing about studying architecture is that you learn all different kinds of stuff and this includes a three-dimensional imagination ( can you learn it? or do you just have it or not?) but also sensitizes you to such aspects like repetition, balance, rhythm, weight, structure, texture.... It all helps.

HG: Other artists work you admire?

PN: Because of my work for PIG (but not only) I'm always looking for new talents, so there is soooo many poeple I could name here but the first ones that come to my mind are Bobby Doherty, Andrew Laumann, Rafa Castells, Bruno Zhu, Elena Vidor, Sylvain-Emmanuel P....

HG: What equipment do you use?

PN: All the pictures you see here are shot with Olympus Mju II, which is my favorite camera. I also own nice and quite standard set of Contax/Yashic point-and-shoots . No digital so far.
